In the village of Tevaitoa, the white tiare apetahi (the island's emblem) grows. Tevaitoa has a beautiful white sandy beach, and is the departure point for the hike to Mount Temehani, which is, according to legends, the gateway to either heaven or hell for Polynesian souls.
