Tetiaroa, The Bird Island
Introduction to Tetiaroa
The only atoll of the Windward Islands — Tetiaroa is comprised of 13 motus (islets) covered with coconut trees, and enclosed by coral reef. The diameter of the atoll is 4.5-miles and has no channels. Tetiaroa is the former island retreat of Tahitian Kings and in 1966 was acquired by Marlon Brando. Marlon Brando fell in love with the Islands of Tahiti while scouting locations for his 1962 film, Mutiny on the Bounty. While on location, he also fell in love with Tarita Teriipia, a Tahitian beauty who starred alongside him in the film. Brando dreamed of creating a sustainable habitat for Tetiaroa — one which allowed visitors to enjoy the atoll in its pristine condition. Although Brando passed away in 2004, his dream has finally been realized with the completion of The Brando Resort.
