Moorea ~ The Magical Island
(Society Islands)
Originally named Aimeo, it was after a high priest had
a vision of a yellow lizard that the name was changed to Moorea
-- the Tahitian name for yellow lizard. Moorea is the tropical South
Seas paradise you have dreamed of. Whether you arrive by plane (7
minutes from Tahiti) or ferry (1/2 hour) the beauty of this majestic
island will instantly inspire you. Magnificent volcanic peaks covered
in green velvet look down upon lapis colored bays and a turquoise
lagoon; beautiful white sand beaches surround the entire island;
Moorea is a favorite of all who visit...
With
a circumference of only 37 miles and a coastline surrounded by paved
road, you can easily cover the island by car or scooter. The more
ambitious may prefer an island tour by bike. Just be sure to visit
the Belvedere lookout point high within the interior of Moorea for
spectacular views of Opunohu and Cook's Bays. For those of you also
wanting an interesting and fun lesson in history and culture, we
recommend a 4x4 tour of the inner island.
Those more partial to the water will find Moorea to be an aquatic
paradise. World famous for its excellent scuba diving, you may also
paddle an outrigger canoe, hop on a jetski or go deep-sea fishing.
You can get a bird's-eye view of the lagoon by parasailing almost
300 feet in the air or you can go to depths of 200 feet within a
submarine explorer. If you have the time, we definitely recommend
a day trip to a motu (one of the small islets within the lagoon).
In Moorea, you will not be at a loss of things to do.
As is true on all the islands, please don’t pass up a chance
to meet the locals. You’ll see more of Tahitian life when
you venture from the hotels.
