Bora Bora Honeymoon Guide

Bora Bora, the Romantic Island

Bora Bora HoneymoonMany people the world over have a fascination with Bora Bora. Just hearing the name, conjures up images of turquoise lagoons. Combine that with the spectacular image of Mount Otemanu dominating the main island and add to it the many motus (islets) surrounding the lagoon and you have what everyone agrees is paradise!

Almost synonymous with Bora Bora are the fantastic Overwater Bungalows. There are very few places in the world with Overwater Bungalows and Bora Bora sets the standard. Fall asleep to the sounds of water lapping beneath your bungalow. Look through a glass panel in the floor to see turquoise waters and feed tropical fish. Wake up to the special treat of enjoying breakfast served to you by outrigger canoe.

Bora Bora is truly the most romantic island in the world. From the dramatic scenery to the privacy and amenities of the overwater bungalows — you will soon discover why it is the #1 destination in the world for “Romance & Sexy Ambiance!”

The Name, Bora Bora

Pora Pora - the island's ancient name, meaning "first born," came from legends passed down that describe this as the first island to rise when Taaroa, the supreme god, fished it out of the waters after the mythical creation of Havai'i, now known as Raiatea. Although the first letter "B" does not exist in the Tahitian language, when Captain Cook first heard the name he mistook the softened sound of the Tahitian "P" for "B" and called the island Bola Bola.

La Villa Mahana is absolutely my favorite restaurant in all of French Polynesia. They are only open for dinner. You may order a la carte or there are two fixed menus. My advice is to each order one of the fixed menus with the wine pairing! I always recommend La Villa Mahana for my honeymoon and vacation clients to Bora Bora and am happy to make reservations for them.

Kaina Hut is a great casual restaurant with wonderful ambiance. Be sure to try their breadfruit gnocchi.

Bloody Mary’s is an institution in Bora Bora. They have a sign out front with every celebrity who has ever eaten there. Their specialty is a variety of fresh fish prepared to your liking.

Mt OtemanuOverwater Bungalows

People who honeymoon or vacation in Tahiti often want to stay in an overwater bungaloiw at some point on their trip - especially on their Bora Bora honeymoon. Overwater Bungalows are the most expensive form of accommodation in Tahiti. But don’t fret, if you have a limited budget there are ways to make it work. You don’t need to do an Overwater Bungalow the entire time. If you’re doing two islands, such as Moorea and Bora Bora for your honeymoon, save it for Bora Bora. I think it’s always best to end on the high note! If you’re only doing one island, you can save money by splitting your time with a Garden Bungalow and doing the Overwater the last night or two. You can read my Tahiti Overwater Bungalow Guide here.
